What is In vs Out – NDIS Supports: Consumables

NDIS News

Consumables are possibly one of the most complex categories for participants to understand what they can and cannot use their NDIS funding for, simply because it is so specific to the individual and so an extensive list.

Assistive technology (AT) that is deemed low-cost (comes under $1,500) makes up a large percentage of the consumables lists. Anything higher than $1,500 is considered mid- or high-cost, depending on the item's amount. Only low-cost AT can be purchased with the consumables budget.

The "Out" list for the category of Consumables has items that can be accessed through the replacement process if the participant is successful with their application.

The items that can be accessed as replacement items are restricted to the below:

• standard commercially available household items e.g. washing machine or dishwasher

• smart watches

• tablet devices

• smartphones

• apps for accessibility or communication

A replacement support must meet certain criteria. It must:

• replace an NDIS support or supports in your plan

• help you the same or more than the NDIS support or supports it's replacing

• cost the same or less than the NDIS support or supports it's replacing.

A replacement support must be for a participant's disability support needs. It is not an extra support but replaces an existing NDIS support or supports in the plan.

When reading through the NDIS Support list, remember that just because a support is "In" doesn't mean it is automatically a support or service anyone can access. Anything paid for with NDIS funding must directly relate to your disability needs. It is important to know that the "In" NDIS Support list is not exhaustive. Every participant is different and has different needs, so it is impossible to list every support or service that could be deemed reasonable and necessary for a participant.

If you are ever in doubt, always speak with your NDIS contact (local area coordinator, early childhood partner or NDIA planner) for clarity about the new NDIS supports. They can give you answers around how the changes might affect your situation based on the supports and services you have been accessing.
